And among these one of the most prominent attractions that have fascinated the tourists all over the world are the Houseboats operating in the Backwaters.

A cruise on these houseboats along the brackish estuaries, breath taking lagoons and arterial canals is bound to give an exhilarating experience to the tourists.

These magical floating houses are called as Kettuvallam in local language which has been derived from the words “Kettu” (tying something with rope) and “Vallam” (boat).

History

For centuries, the boats in this region have been used as a major means of transport. Initially when the road transport was non-existent or  at a very nascent stage of development, people largely relied on the water transport for their daily commute as well as transfer of goods and cargos. The water channels played a major role in linking remote villages and islets with the main land. It is said that in its primitive form, the Kettuvallams used to be rice boats or country boats with a thatched roof made from coconut and palm leaves that was mainly used by the noble and affluent members of the society. As technological advances were made, the traditional Kettuvallams made way for the more sophisticated and luxury Houseboats.

Houseboat Building Process

The houseboats were traditionally built by using large planks of wood sourced from jack tree. Instead of nails, the planks used to be tied together with coir ropes. Coating of black resin made from boiled cashew nut shells used to be applied on the outer side for protection from decay and wear and tear. In recent times planks of woods are still used to build the hulls but are usually riveted. Additional materials like fiberglass, marine plywood , chicken wire mesh are also used in the structure to make it more stable and durable. Currently the houseboats in Kerala are built by two companies namely Grandeur Boatbuilders and Samudra Shipyard.
